Cognitive Solutions features a wide variety of labels and tags, including direct thermal labels (no ribbon required), thermal transfer labels (which require a ribbon), jewelry labels, and hand tags.

Direct Thermal Labels-

 Direct thermal material do not require a ribbon. . Direct thermal labels are coated and the heat applied from the printhead creates the image. These labels are ideally suited for short term use and indoor applications - such as retail and office use

Thermal Transfer Labels -

Thermal transfer labels require a ribbon to transfer the image onto the label. For applications that require a more durable, long lasting label, thermal transfer is preferred.

Thermal Transfer Ribbons -

Required for thermal transfer material. Ribbons come in three formulations. General purpose wax ribbons are best for general purpose printing.. Wax-resin ribbons provide a better resistance to scratch and smear resistance as well as chemical resistance. Full resin ribbons provide the best performance in harsh environmental conditions.

There are other factors in purchasing thermal labels and ribbons. Some labels have a Gap Cut in between each label. The gap serves as a sensor to tell your printer when to index to the next label. Some labels use a black sensor bar. to index labels. Labels also can have a permanent and removable adhesive. The most popular labels are the paper type labels that you see on boxes and for most product identifications. Some labels have a synthetic material (like a vinyl) for greater durability and an enhanced appearance.
